A letter to my 40-Year-Old self
Hey me! . . .no . . Hey you! sounds better. I hope you are reading this at the comfort of your living room or office. Smiling at the thought that you wrote this when you were loosely half your age. I wont say I hope you are rich but you should be. All the struggles I have and am enduring cannot be in vain. Put your legs up on the hassock if this true. You have made it me! Yes you have.
If wishes were horses. Why horses though? A beggar doesn't need horses, simply food and shelter but not a ride for sure. Ride to where? Oops.. . .I'm drifting off. Where was I. . .Wishes. . . . wishes that you (future me) will fulfill. (INSHALLAH)
I hope you have a home. Not just a house. A place you find serenity. Surrounded with beautiful flowers that every dawn bring in the fresh morning fragrance. And a beautiful wife that you love and respect. Because you are in a pact. The one lasts forever. You want to rush home after work to see her and tell her about your day. Well I guess that also means you should have a job. I hope you are done kissing ass and your ass is now being kissed (I know how that sounds but am not deleting anything) I hope you love your job and you do it with passion.
I hope you have the latest version of Chevrolet packed on your driveway and another model that I won't name (surprise meπ) and that you finally had enough experience driving that you no longer marvel at how amazing driving is. At how swift the steering wheel synchronizes with the wheels and makes smooth turns. At how one rolls down their window to say hello to an old friend. At how it feels to get stuck in a jam. Or how amazing it is to sing along to your favorite music while driving.
This is a warning. You should not be fat with a Kitambi. If you haven't been running, let this be a wake up call. Do morning runs, hit the gym. You'll live longer. I hope you have understood staying fit makes you flexible and that you stopped going for aerobics to be entertained with the athletic movement of a ladies back-side during a session.
Did you grow a beard? Please don't. I have a feeling ladies would have shifted their admiration to something else. Maybe ears. Aki Marvo una maskio supuu ha-ha. Sporadic creatures.
I hope you have traveled the world. For pleasure and work. Making a name in international tabloids. Meh, that could be extreme let me lower the bar, I hope you have gone to places I am dreaming of. Maybe even more. The Burj Khalifa and the Virgin Hyper-loop in Dubai. Had a taste of the American Dream. Had a spin on the London eye. Enjoyed a swim on the Indian, Pacific and Atlantic coasts. Took a bite of sushi in a Chinese Restaurant. Astonished at the sight of limitless vastness of the universe through a telescope. And terrified by the height when sky-diving.
I hope you have a man-cave. Where you have a play station (whatever the version will be) and a large screen and a messaging chair. Where you escape the real world and immerse your mind into the vast virtual world. But then you will be too busy to spend a lot of time there. There should also be a shelve with books, because you love reading.
I hope you are prayerful and observe the Sabbath. Because it is faith that keeps you wise and successful.
I hope you have a daughter and a son. Or a son and another son or two daughters. Maybe four kids. That you love and cherish. That you try your best to give them a better life than you had. But you also teach them about the hardships in life. I know you hate going to those parents meetings. But attend them once in a while.
I hope you visit mum as often as you can to let her enjoy the fruits of her grit and feel proud. So that every-time she engages in a colloquy with an old friend she doesn't fail to mention, my son works at this or that place. Also, bring your kids to meet grandma, sounds weird at the moment - I think I'll stick to my mum.
"Hey kids, today we're gonna visit my mum." Yeah that sounds better. Then they will rejoice because she never fails to put down a mature hen (DUH!) every-time you visit. She has trees where they can climb, pick fruits and make swings. I know you love telling tales of your childhood in that house.
I hope you are happy. And funny. Like you have always been (I know some don't agree with this but majority wins)
Hopes and dreams vanish in thin air. But they give birth to goals. Goals that when worked on, actualize the dreams. I will work as a hard as the good Lord allows me to. I aspire to prosper and will be thankful for every little step I make towards building my air-castles.

Dear 40 year old Marvin lemme
